Dr. Patrick Nyren is currently serving as the Euphonium Instructor at the United States Army School of Music. He joined the U.S. Army in 2013 after earning his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music Degrees in euphonium performance from the University of North Texas under the guidance of Dr. Brian L. Bowman. Previously, he received his Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Education at the University of Southern Maine, where he began his college education at the early age of 16 and studied with Michael S. Milnarik.
Dr. Nyren has been very active as a performer for the last several years. Prior to beginning his career as an Army musician, he was a winner in the University of Southern Maine (2007) and University of North Texas (2011) Concerto Competitions, was the winner of the Inaugural Solo Euphonium Competition held at the United States Army Band Tuba Euphonium Workshop in 2017, and has appeared at several festivals and conferences as a soloist and clinician throughout the United States. He has performed at the International Tuba Euphonium Conferences in Tucson, AZ (2010) and Bloomington, IN (2014), the Cosmopolitan Tuba Euphonium Workshop (2007-2010), the Blast of Brass Workshop (2012), the United States Army Band Tuba Euphonium Workshop (2015 and 2017), and several regional ITEA events throughout the United States. He has also had the pleasure of performing with the United States Army Field Band, Lone Star Wind Orchestra, the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the El Paso Symphony Orchestra.
As an avid supporter of new euphonium music, Nyren has commissioned multiple new pieces in the last few years - most recently, a new concerto for euphonium and orchestra by Howard J. Buss. The piece was premiered for euphonium and piano in March 2018 in recital at Columbus State University in Georgia. As a military musician, he has been a soloist and clinician throughout the country and internationally appearing at several universities, schools, and conferences as an ambassador of Army music. He is a two-time recipient of the Colonel Finley R. Hamilton Outstanding Military Musician Award in 2014 and again in 2017.
Dr. Nyren lives on Virginia Beach, Virginia, with his wife, Erin, and their three children, Liam, Norah, and Elizabeth.
